CNN Hit 20-Year Primetime Ratings Low In May


Here is my assessment of the situation with cable news. Cable news is like a friend. CNN is the friend who tells you what you should know. MSNBC tells you what you want to hear and Fox tells you what they want you to hear and know. From its inception decades ago, CNN has tried to report the news in a fair and balanced manner. Unfortunately, many news watchers today don't want straight news. People today want to know what the journalists are thinking and whose side they are on politically or in general. The news can't just be reported on without an opinion. Pop culture is dictating that journalists become commentators and provide their personal feedback.



CNN has an attractive stable of smart journalists (minus two or three who should go), but the station doesn't know how to best use them. If the station could get its arms around programming and better utilize the staff it might have a chance.
